BSI Singapore launches a new carbon-neutral standard to help organizations reach net zero

Singapore, January 30, 2024 – British Standards Institution (BSI) in Singapore has launched locally  a new international standard on carbon neutrality to help organizations reach net zero and accelerate their progress to a sustainable world.

The new standard, BS ISO 14068-1:2023, is designed to enable organizations to make independently verifiable claims of carbon or climate neutrality, including about its products, services or events. The guidelines set out detailed, verifiable requirements on quantification and reduction or removal of GHG emissions, and the benefits of the carbon credits. This comes amidst escalating expectation that organizations can play a role in combatting global warming, including via reducing greenhouse gases and striving for net-zero emissions.

The international standard was launched at an exclusive event hosted at the Singapore Sustainability Academy (SSA). The theme for the event was “Unlocking Tomorrow:  Sustainable Horizons – Charting the Future Together” that explored the transformative influence of AI and digital transformation on sustainability trends, forging a path toward a more environmentally conscious future.

Emmanuel Herve, ASEAN Managing Director at BSI, led an insightful quiz session during the event, "Debunking Carbon," fostering a deeper understanding of carbon-related terminologies, carbon neutrality, and net zero. Wan Yang, APAC Head of Sustainability Solutions at BSI, shared profound insights into ISO 14068 and its implications. Todd Redwood, Managing Director, Global Food and Retail, BSI, offered perspectives on how AI and digital transformation could redefine sustainability trends for the food industry. Additionally, John Lo, Founder of the Asia Carbon Institute (ACI), presented innovative carbon offset solutions contributing to a more sustainable future.

Yamato Transport Co., the first organization to receive the Opinion Statement based on ISO 14068-1 from BSI Group, shared best practices during the event. Katsuhiko Umetsu, Permanent Executive Fellow and CSO, Yamato Transport Co., Ltd, discussed the organization’s commitment to carbon neutrality and the journey towards environmental impact reduction. Quah Zheng Wei, CEO of Accredify, also shared best practices for driving a sustainable business with digital trust by building digital resilience.

Miranda Chen, Country Manager for BSI in Singapore, expressed BSI's aspiration to collaborate with various partners, including government bodies and institutions of higher learning, to accelerate the sustainability agenda in Singapore and the region. She emphasized the opportunity to bring awareness to organizations of all sizes on navigating their sustainability journey by staying informed about latest trends, global requirements, implications, and innovative technologies.

Michael Lam, Managing Director for BSI APAC Assurance, said: "We are at a critical moment for the world’s sustainability journey and organizations have a key role to play in responding to this.

“BSI congratulates Yamato on their achievement, showcasing a commitment to leadership in achieving carbon neutrality, particularly noteworthy in one of the most challenging sectors for emissions reduction. As the APAC region continues to be the manufacturing and supply-chain hub for global organizations, Yamato's success has the potential to accelerate progress toward a sustainable world for the benefit of all."

To cap off the event, there was an engaging panel discussion that featured all speakers, including Philip Tan, Business Development Director, SP Digital Pte Ltd, and Aubrey Koh, Senior Manager, Sustainability, Temasek Polytechnic, where they explored how organizations can empower their next steps toward carbon neutrality and sustainability.
